Facts and Statistics

28,251 Black/African American patients make up 31 out of 100 (31.3%) of all patients waiting for a kidney transplant, as of January 16, 2022.

777 Black/African American patients received a living donor kidney transplant, representing nearly 3 out of 100 (2.8%) Black/African American patients on the waiting list, in 2021.

465 Black/African American people donated a kidney, representing nearly 8 out of 100 (7.8%) living kidney donors nationally, in 2021.

Nearly 75 out of 10,000 Black/African American living donors are estimated to get kidney disease 15 years after donating.

Living kidney donors face a greater chance of getting kidney disease post-donation if they are male, ages 18-30 years, and have a family history of kidney disease.

The chances of getting kidney disease are:

    • 90 out of 10,000 (0.9%) living kidney donors
    • 14 out of 10,000 (0.14%) healthy non-donors
    • 326 out of 10,000 (3.3%) general population
